Lumbar Disc Herniations and Chiropractic

I’ve worked with many patients over my 14 years as a chiropractor, and have had many successful outcomes regarding the treatment of herniated lumbar (low back) discs.  These discs are like jelly donuts that act as cushions between two spinal bones (vertebral bodies).  Improper lifting, obesity, and poor dietary habits are common factors associated with the condition.  Traumatic injury is also a less common cause of herniation.  They are most commonly found at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 segmental levels.  Common symptoms include, but are not limited to, shooting low back pain into the leg and/or foot.  Numbness/tingling extending into the leg and/or foot.  Sharp/shooting pain upon coughing, sneezing, or “bearing down”.  This type of disc injury is usually confirmed by use of MRI imaging of the affected region.  While surgery is one of the more common treatments necessary to resolve the symptoms, non-invasive chiropractic treatment has been shown to be effective in reducing or eliminating pain/numbness associated with some lumbar disc herniations.

Effective chiropractic treatment includes spinal adjusting, spinal decompression by use of a flexion/distraction table and various therapeutic exercises and stretches.  If you, or a family member/friend, suffer from or suspect a herniated disc, feel free to give us a call for a complimentary consultation.  Our office is highly qualified to diagnose and treat disc herniations and advise on best treatment options.

Always working to optimize your health,
